Rebecca Roks
Filmmaker and Photographer
Creative treatment of reality
Hi I'm Rebecca Roks, filmmaker, photographer, archive nerd and pedagogue with background studies in Documentary filmmaking.
I love to tell stories, may it be with my own footage or someone else's.
With a Bachelor and Master of Arts degree in Cinema, I specialize in camera but also work with light, sound, writing, editing, color-grading, video-mapping. I'm at ease all around a set.
This series of photos was taken with Guido's archives from the nineties.
We met in a kneipe on a fall night. He was interested in me because he had heard the shutter release of my Nikon FM2. The forgotten sound reminded him of "an old life" where he used to take close ups of people's faces with a polaroid macro camera made for dentists.
Since 1981, he has been living in the same apartment in Kreuzberg Berlin. Although some changes have been made, forever remains the bath in the middle of his living space, next to his charcoal heater and the inscription Bad in German. Guido lives in his memories.
They fluctuate over time and become something else.
On the right picture, what is left of the burnt photo is a wax mark on the wood.

LAB WORK
These two cyanotypes have been made with wetplate photographs dating 1910-1920.
The core of my work lies in experimenting in the lab or on set with visuals, optics
and chemicals.
I glitch archive images like a DJ would sample music and mix it.
I use them on stage during my VJ performances.
I create moving images out of photographies by going over them with lenses.

Les Rencontres de la Photographie, Arles
2019-2022-2024
In 2019 and 2022 I worked as a cultural mediator/pedagogue with different publics, mostly scholars from 6 to 25 years old during the Rentrée en Images at the Arles Photography Festival.
Each year we present five exhibitions and lead workshops on the practice of Photography for over 10 000 visitors.
Now in 2024 as in 2022, I work there again as pedagogue and train interns on how to lead mediations in the exhibitions.
This has also inspired me to hold my own workshops in Berlin in 2021.
“The Documentary Film Promotion”
or, ”The state of my career these days”
These photographies are part of a photography book made of pictures from Bosnia taken in august 2024.
Like the name of this shop I still try to fully fathom, they reveal a strange fakeness to everyday life and make me question my place as a photographer, producing documentary pictures of a world in decay due to climate change and dealing endlessly with the scars of wars.
It was presented in GhostRaum Berlin as part of a group exhibition in december 2024.

In Sarajevo, a lot of the buildings still bear the scars of bullets being fired during the 90´s war.
The focus point doesn´t show them, but they are signified by the spots on the bus stop in the foreground,
